One of the major problems in the field of hydrology in Greece is the distribution of the gauging stations within the country. Their distribution at the time is highly uneven with very dense network of stations in some regions while large areas are not covered at all. As a consequence the gauging stations network cannot be used reliably in the analysis of the spatial distribution of different kinds of hydrologic information and therefore generalised results may be inaccurate.
One of the main tasks of NDBHMI was the study and the establishment of selected stations distribution over the country. The selected stations will form the National Network of Gauging Stations which will cover evenly and with acceptable density the area of the country. Additionaly, the development of a pilot telemetric network in Attica is suggested which will operate automatically, continuously transfering data to the main database of NDBHMI.

Together with the National Network of Gauging Stations, the project team studied the development of network of 15 high resolution gauging stations in Attica. These stations will automatically transfer data to the main database of NDBHMI at programmed intervals. The selection of the siting of the stations was made taking into account the geographical distribution as well as the security of their siting place. The main equipment consists of the following :
- Auto-recording meteorological stations
- Data - transfer equipment
- Customized software for the automatic transfering of recordings to the database
This network will work in parallel with a meteorological radar that NTUA is in the process of buying. This sytem will constitute an integrated storm prediction system in the wider area of Athens.
